“I’d rather be a nobody than to be like everyone”
This is a line from Adéla’s newest single “Ain’t in LA”. The entire song is a call to anyone that has ever felt like their dreams were held back by their location. For context, if you haven’t heard Adéla’s new single, which you should, the song illustrates Adéla’s experience in LA as an immigrant, and how the immigrants in the city help make the city special. She also found inspiration from her mom’s childhood growing up in Slovakia. Her grandfather used to sneak in posters of western pop artists for her mom because Western content communist Czechoslovakia did not permit western culture. Many people like her mom face barriers to sharing their talents and pursuing their dreams due to where they live. In spite of this, Adéla encourages fans to chase their dreams and no matter the odds.
To everyone reading, you’re allowed to have “impossible”dreams despite your location. Where you come from, may seem like an obstacle, but it makes your story even more unique. You don’t need to be like everyone else, to have your story shared. All you need, is hunger, determination, and fearlessness to do anything you want. Life is too short to let something as small as place of origin to define your future. Where you come from will always be the place your story starts, but it doesn’t have to be its end.
