There is this show that I’ve been loving on Netflix. It’s called Half & Half, and the show is like the perfect flashback to the early 2000s. I was born in the 2000s, so I don’t remember much from that decade, but watching this show is like an escape from the chaos that is the 2020s.
The Premise
The show is about these 2 half sisters named Mona and Dee Dee. They share the same father, but they had drastically different lives growing up: Mona grew up with a single mother and her father barely being around while Dee Dee grew up in a wealthy household with her father and mother always there for her.
Because Mona lost out on her father and childhood, she resents her sister a little, but it’s understandable. Dee Dee got the life and support she longed for as a kid. Don’t get me wrong. Dee Dee is extremely smart, graduated at the top of her class, and is in law school when the show starts, but she was able to accomplish these things with the help of her father’s money. Mona never had that safety net.
The first episode introduces viewers to Mona. She’s living in one of her father’s apartments(he’s a real estate mogul) blissfully. Then, horror strikes. Her little sister Dee Dee moves upstairs. Mona has successfully avoided her sister all these years. How can she still do that with Dee Dee living a floor away?
Why I Love Half & Half
It was so much fun watching these 2 sisters grow close, get over their differences, and form a beautiful friendship. The show is more than these 2 characters as well. Other wacky characters like the girls’ mothers and Mona’s best friend add to the laughter.
It’s fun to watch black people live their life without having some immense struggle be their entire story. Half & Half does a really good job of portraying black people in a way that’s lighthearted, and a little sill sometimes.
Each episode is around 22 minutes long, so it’s great when you want a little laugh or something to relax with. Sadly, they are taking the show off of Netflix on October 14th, but in the meantime, watch as much as you can. It’s definitely worth starting.
Thank you for reading this week’s article. I hope you all watch Half & Half on Netflix or its next streaming service sometime soon. Make sure to subscribe to be notified of new posts. Stay sharp 😉
