This year is my first year in college, and I spent a lot of time picking out what clothes I would bring to school. I had to be especially particular and smart in my picks because I’m an out of state student. Because of my situation, it’s a lot harder for me to go home and get clothes. With this in mind I wanted to give advice to other college students, future college students, and people who want to revamp their closets. Below is a series of questions to ask your self when you are building versatile closet.
Think About How You Like to Dress
- What is your day-to-day style like?
- Do you prefer more casual clothing or do you like to be a little more dressier?
- When you were a kid what did you imagine the future you would dress like?
- How do you want to be perceived by others? How you dress is the first thing people notice and it also immensely effects their perception of you, so it’s important that you take this into account. At the end of the day, dress for yourself, so people can see the real you.
Do a Closet Overhaul
- When was the last time I wore this piece of clothing? If you can’t remember, you probably shouldn’t bring it.
- If I could only pick 10 pieces of clothing from my closet, would I pick this one piece?
- If I could only pick 10 pieces of clothing from my closet, what pieces would I pick? Why would I pick these pieces?
- How versatile is this piece of clothing? Can I wear it day to night? Can I only wear it to this one specific occasion?
Buy a Few(Just a Few) Staple Pieces
- Am I considering the quality of this piece?
- Do I have something like this in my closet?
- Again, how versatile is this piece of clothing? Does this piece pair well with other things I have in my closet?
- Can this piece be washed and dried in a normal washer and dryer? Dry cleaning in college can be a little difficult and pricey.
A Few More Tips
- When you buy staple pieces, donโt think about buying so many distinct/one-of-a-kind pieces, but instead purchase simple ones that you can accentuate with accessories.
- Donโt be afraid to buy from a clothing store you have not shopped at before like a thrift store. Thrift stores can be a little messy and unorganized, but if you go with an open mind, you’ll find something.
- If you do a closet overhaul, I recommend selling your clothes at a local 2nd hand store to make some cash or donating.
