Do you guys feel that crispness in the air, see the leaves falling down, sense the end of summer? It’s official. Fall is here. That means binging Gilmore Girls, baking little treats, and slaying fierce fall outfits. All summer I’ve been seeing vests, and I’ve fallen in love with them. Even though I love a fun little shirt or pair of shoes here and there, I’m someone that’s drawn to more simple, classic pieces. I want to be able to wear something from season to season, and that’s elegant and versatile. Vests are perfect for this. You can wear them to the office, to class, to a dinner party, to a casual lunch. They’re an amazing addition to all closets.
I saw a lot of cute outfits with vests this summer, but now that fall is here, I wanted to give you all some ideas of how to wear vests in the fall.
1. Layer Underneath Your Vest
You may have worn some linen vests this summer, but those aren’t going to keep you cold in the coming months and as temperatures start dropping. Layering is the way to go. If you’re living in an area that’s still pretty warm, (Shout out to my fellow Texans) you may want to wait on layering. If you’re in a cooler area, try wearing a simple t-shirt underneath your vest. We haven’t reached the severe winter temperatures yet, so a t-shirt is good for now. Once we hit late September, early October, temperatures will start to drop, which means sweater weather. What looks good underneath a vest? A turtleneck sweater. I love turtlenecks. They’re so warm and cozy. Get a couple solid colored ones like black, tan, and at least one pop of color to pair underneath a vest. They’ll keep you warm and make you look scholarly.
2. Look for Vests with a Thicker Material
If you know a linen vest isn’t going to keep you warm, then opt for a vest with a thicker material. I’ve noticed that good quality vests with a thicker material are on the pricier side, so keep y’all’s eyes peeled for the deals, manifest through a Pinterest board, and check your local thrift store. Thrift stores can be a little overwhelming, but I recommend going with a friend for moral support, and stopping at a Dutch Bros for a little drink. Y’all didn’t ask, but my Dutch Bros order is a lemonade with passion fruit, peach, and mango smoothie mix. One of the employees put me on it, and I’ve been hooked since. Okay back to vests. Thicker materials such as cotton, tweed, and wool are the way to go.
When I was writing this article, I was struck with an outfit idea. A warm brown vest with a cropped pea coat on top, a turtleneck underneath(neutral or maybe a pop of color), boots, a skirt, and some tights. Instead of the skirt, I was also thinking of putting some slim black pants with this outfit. I definitely ate with this one. Tell me what you all think in the comments below.
