Doechii: A Style Star in the Making

Hello everyone! It’s been awhile, but I’m back. Today, I wanted to shine a light on a rising starlet that deserves some praise. Doechiiiiiiiiii!!! Doechii’s finally been given the spotlight at the right time, after years of hard work. I say the right time because there are many artists that lose control over their image so early in their career. From what I’ve seen, Doechii has control of every aspect. Her music production, performances, and especially her looks.

Often recording artists are forced into a mold by their agencies which prevents their fans from seeing their authentic self. This is the complete opposite of Doechii and her team. I’ve known about Doechii for some time now, but I’ve just recently begun to appreciate her style. She was in attendance at Paris Fashion Week earlier this month, and her looks need to be talked about now. Let’s do a deep dive into Doechii’s Paris Fashion Week looks together.

Look #1

When I first saw this Schiaparelli look, I gasped at the sight of Doechii. She looks so effortlessly elegant, and timeless. When I saw this photo of her, I immediately wanted to frame it because this is a look that needs to be remembered for centuries. I love how the denim corset creates these little billows in the white dress. It gives the gown more shape, and structure. It’s no longer just a basic white maxi dress. Last, but definitely not least, the hair is perfect for this look. The face framing curls and the volume just add to the effortlessness Doechii exhibits.

Look #2

ChloΓ© has had some misses in the past, but recently I’ve been obsessed with the pieces they’ve been putting on celebrities. One thing I love about Doechii is that she’s not afraid to make her presence known, and be loud which I find inspiring. This ChloΓ© looks encapsulates everything Doechii is because it’s bold and extravagant. She’s wearing a fur stole, every ring on Earth, and butt length braids. On top of that, she’s not wearing any shoes. This look is a lot, but every element works together so beautifully because she went for it. If this look had been toned down, it would’ve fallen flat. Because Doechii and her stylist saw the picture, it works.

Look #3

One thing about Doechii is that she’s going to wear a hat, and wear it well. The oversized newsboy cap is so chic and reminiscent of 90s hip hop. The hat is a little goofy looking, but by tilting it to the side it shows more of Doechii’s beautiful face and adds another angle making the look less one dimensional.

Though Doechii plays a major role in the pieces she wears, I must also acknowledge her extremely talented stylist Sam Woolf. It’s reviving to see a new stylist in the celebrity styling space. Woolf not only helps Doechii tell stories on the red carpet, but he also helps bring her visions to life on stage.

Using the Renwick Gallery for Design Inspiration

Hello everyone! I wanted to tell you all about this little activity I did over the long weekend. On Monday, I visited the Renwick Gallery, and the inspiration I found inside surprised me.

The Renwick Gallery is a very small space, with four rooms across 2 floors. Because of this, every piece is carefully and thoughtfully handpicked to make the best use of the space. Unlike other galleries, Renwick places a particular focus on procuring craft and decorative art for the museum. One of the curators of the gallery described craft as art where the method used to make the work is visible. For example, pottery, basket weaving, and stained glass are all forms of craft. On pottery, you can spot the places where the artist molded and moved the clay. With basket weaving, you can see the folds and loops the weaver made.

While I walked through the gallery, I was completely baffled by the pieces I saw and the stories behind them. There was this gorgeous weaved basket with a very heartwarming story about the artist’s family. Another artist created this extremely intricate beaded cloth to bring awareness to global climate change. The works in the Renwick didn’t only highlight the artists’ stellar craftsmanship. The works also highlighted the artists’ storytelling capabilities and messages.

Before I left for the gallery, I told myself that I was going to sketch one design based off of a work that inspired me. Throughout the gallery, I searched for a piece that called my name. Many of the works deserved a second view in my opinion, but there was really only one artwork that I kept lingering around.

Vase with Landscape and Dinosaurs by Steven Young Lee

Steven Young Lee made the above porcelain vase. The vase’s shape, and the story it told me completely struck me. When you imagine the vase without the huge gaping hole in it, it’s a nice vase. It would look great sitting on some wealthy person’s shelf, but there’s less depth. When I saw the hole in the vase, it prompted me to think about pushing boundaries, but also the beauty in imperfections. On the surface of the vase is crazing which is when the tension between the ceramic body and the glaze forms cracks along the surface. Whether the artists intentionally wanted the crazing or not, it adds more texture and adds to the scene painted on the vase.

The vase inspired me to sketch a strapless jacquard gown with blue printed designs in the style of the vase. Additionally in the center region of the chest, I want it to look like the dress is exploding. The fabric of the dress will flap out and fold onto the dress to create a star shaped hole in the cleavage region. Lastly, the dress has a mermaid style skirt/train. This gown would look so amazing on Anya Taylor-Joy. It’s such a random thought, but I know that she would look absolutely stunning in it. Imagine this gown with some dark blue heels and a diamond necklace and earrings. Joy would stop the red carpet in this look.

Reviewing the Fall 1994/1995 Collection from Isaac Mizrahi

Hello everyone! For this week’s article, I wanted to do something that I haven’t really done before. I’ve been thinking a lot about clothing from brands’ past collections, and how so many have been forgotten. I wanted to look back at a collection, and highlight the amazing work done by the designer and their team. Hence, for this week’s post I’m reviewing the Fall 1994/1995 collection from the outstanding Isaac Mizrahi.

We’re starting off with a very simple top that he weaves in and out of the show: a corset with a pointed hem and spaghetti straps. The corset looks well constructed and the pointed hem makes the waist look even more snatched. From first glance, the top doesn’t really scream Fall to me, but with some styling I see the vision. Imagine the bronze velvet corset on the left layered on top of a black turtleneck with a black skirt. The pink corset could even be worn on its own with a cardigan thrown on top and some jeans on a warmer Fall day.

The sweater above just looks so cozy and chic. It would be  perfect for the office, a daytime outing, or even running errands. I feel like you could wear it as a top or jacket if unbuttoned. The collar can be kept up or folded down. Either way, this thick sweater looks so soft and warm, and is a great transition piece from Fall to Winter. I imagine wearing this sweater open with a white tee under and loose black suit pants for the office. On the weekend, I see this sweater buttoned up with a matching skirt underneath and some boots.

Outfit from the Fall 1994 Isaac Mizrahi Collection

Sometimes, brands miss the mark when it comes to designing accessories. Mr.Isaac Mizrahi though did not miss with the hats in this collection. Featured in the show are hats that have really cool textures and colors that, in my opinion, aren’t widely common. For example, the yellow beret with the fluffy top is so playful, but I feel like it would be a challenging style. In the sense that, if I were to style it, I know that I would have to carefully pick out each piece of the outfit, so I do the hat justice. It’s a hat that lives on the line between silly and chic. If styled just right, you’ve changed the game.

The shoes in this collection are absolutely gorgeous. There’s a nice mix of practical everyday shoes and unconventional shoes like the sock boots. I need the fur trimmed grey heeled ankle boots on the left in my collection NOW. The stiletto heel makes the shoe look sleek, but the fur brings out a cheekier side. The grey boots would pair so well with a simple dark grey circle skirt, white sweater, and black sheer tights.

“How to Dress Like”: 10 Things I Hate About You

Hello everyone! I hope you all are having a productive week especially if you’re going back to school for the Spring. This week, I wanted to do another installment of the How to Dress Like series. For the first installment, I chose the show That’s So Raven, but for this installment I’ve chosen the classic 90s teen movie, 10 Things I Hate About You.

10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favorite 90s movies of all time because of the witty banter, realistic teen portrayal, and fun fashion. Though fashion wasn’t the main focus, the film is a prime example of teen fashion during the 90s. The chunky flip flops, sneakers, and prints seen in the movie reflect how fun teens used to dress. I plan on showing you all different ways you can incorporate these style aspects into your everyday wardrobe if you admired the fashion from the film.

Chunky Shoes

In the film you see a lot of the characters wearing chunky shoes whether it be flip flops, mary janes, or sneakers. Chunky shoes have been prominent amongst the fashion world recently with the rise in chunky shoes from brands like New Balance and Converse. What I love about a chunky sneaker or she, is they can give the person wearing them a little more confidence through height. Additionally, if you have low foot arches like me, they’re a bit more comfortable than flat shoes. 

The easiest way to implement this style aspect into your outfits is by looking for some simple chunky shoes like platform converse or vans that you can pair with anything. You can even buy some platform mary janes if you want something less casual. If you purchase mary janes I recommend pairing them with a black mesh sock or even some white ones with a trim.

Prints and Patterns

What happened to a fun print or pattern? I know we’ve seen a lot of leopard and cheetah print clothing lately, but I wish there was more color. In 10 Things I Hate About You, the characters are seen in so many fun cool prints that catch the eye and take the outfits up a notch. To incorporate this style aspect, I recommend looking for some cool prints in your closet then paring them with a simple top or bottom. If you don’t own many prints, a cool graphic tee works as well. Then, once you’ve nailed this, add another print into the mix. For example, pair a graphic tee with striped pants, or a floral top with a gingham skirt. Mix and match until you feel most comfortable.

 

 

Secondhand Clothing

Mandella, one of the most underrated characters in this film, had some of the best looks. All of her outfits featured really cool pieces or one of a kind jewelry that made her stand out amongst the rest of the students. After looking again at her outfits, I can immediately tell that she was an avid thrifter. 

If you’ve ever wanted to emulate Mandella’s looks, I advise you all to head to a thrift store and look around for one of a kind pieces that you fall in love with. When you thrift, take your time though. Thrifting is an activity that requires patience. Additionally, if you really liked the red crochet top she’s pictured wearing to the left, I found a pattern and video you can use to make it at home.

Looks Celebrities Could Rewear from the 2025 Golden Globes

Hello Everyone! For this week’s post we’re going to be discussing the looks from the Golden Globes, but there’s a twist. Instead of giving you all a best dressed list, I will be giving other ways the looks worn can be styled to rewear. I was very inspired by Cate Blanchett and Viola Davis. Both women rewore looks they’ve previously dawned at other red carpets, and looked classy and beautiful. Their looks made me wonder how outfits worn by other attendees at the Golden Globes could be restyled or reworked for other events.

How to Rewear the Looks

Zendaya

Zendaya looked absolutely mesmerizing at this year’s Golden Globes. Her look was very old Hollywood with the soft curls in the bob, and the flowing satin train. I imagine Zendaya could rewear this Louis Vuitton gown by removing the train, and swapping out the tangerine heels for cobalt suede heels. In addition, instead of the diamond Bulgari necklace she could wear a tighter blue sapphire choker. For her hair, I still imagine some soft waves, but her hair is mid back length. My look idea is a little more toned down, but it’d still look elegant on the carpet.

Cate Blanchett

The queen of rewears Mrs.Cate Blanchett once again showed us all that we can’t let beautiful clothing sit in our closet. It’s a complete waste of the beautiful and expensive clothes we purchase. With this gown, I’d like to see it a little shorter at the knee. Then, carry the hemline to the calf using the mesh fabric seen on her shoulders to create an a-line skirt. Some gold pumps and her hair pulled back to top it all off.

Viola Davis

Viola Davis looked so powerful in this gown at the Golden Globes. A gown she actually wore last year at the LACMA Art + Film Gala. If she were to rewear this gown again, I’d love to see it off the shoulder. For jewelry, she could wear a necklace with a purple teardrop pendant. I would keep the hair the same because her voluminous natural hair would show off the necklace and frame her face.

Tilda Swinton

Swinton’s top looks so well crafted and sophisticated, but I feel like it can also be dressed down. With some looser fitting light blue jeans and a white heel the top would look so nice at like a more casual event like a gallery opening or even a brunch. The top is so simple that I can see it being worn in multiple ways.

Jeremy Strong

Rewear

Jeremy Strong’s looks was definitely a standout amongst the mens looks, but I admire the risk he took. He didn’t get lost in the crowd of boring black suits. For this rewear, he should scrap the jacket and sweater. Instead, I can see a bulky cream sweatshirt or hoodie. Keep the bucket hat, and for the shoes some tan adidas tan gazelles. It’s casual, but fun.

In a world where fast fashion is steadily creeping on us, it’s important we all look at what we have in our closets instead of immediately scrolling through H&M or Zara for new clothes. The ones that can help spread the rewear movement are celebrities. They’re constantly attending red carpets and events where they’ll be photographed. By rewearing their clothes, they encourage fans to practice sustainability, and slow down the effects fast fashion.

How to Pick the Best Boots for You this Season

Hello everyone! I know it’s been a couple weeks, and I’m so sorry for that. With the election, school, and life in general, I haven’t had enough time to write an article that I felt was worth posting. This week though, I feel like I had finally had an idea I felt was worth writing about. This article is all about boots.

Have you guys been feeling that chill in the air? Do you feel that sense of promise fluttering around you? It’s the holiday season, and also boots season. Surprisingly, I don’t own any right now, and I really want to get a couple pairs that will last me, and I’ll find comfortable. Below are some of the criteria I’ll be using when looking for new boots that I thought you all might find informational.

Criteria for Buying New Boots

  1. My number one criteria for when I’m looking for new boots this season is to avoid anything impractical. Nothing with a pointy toe and nothing with a skinny heel. I know I know. Boots like these look killer on, but at the same time, they’ll also kill your feet. I’ve always had foot issues all my life, and I don’t want that exacerbated by a shoe that’ll squeeze my toes and give me ankle pain. If you really want a pair with a pointy toe, I recommend really taking the time to break them in and additionally not wearing them for hours on end.
  2. This boots season it’s all about the leather. I’m avoiding suede because they are so annoying to clean. Suede in general is annoying to clean. You don’t want them to get wet or you’ll get water marks, and the color fades with time. If any of you feel inclined to buy a suede boot, try looking for black suede boots. Stains aren’t as visible on them, and therefore you won’t be as worried about getting them dirty.
  3. It’s rounded toes and square toes only for me this season. I want to give my toes some room to breathe, and these toe shapes will allow me to do this. Additionally, these toe shapes will allow me to wear my boots for longer periods of time with limited amounts of pain.
  4. Block heels only. I know I want a boot with a little height, but no stiletto heels. They are painful to walk in and impractical for everyday wear. Since I don’t have ankles like Zendaya, I’ll be sticking to my block heels. It’s just a bit more practical for me when walking around campus. When I’m in pain, I get irritated. No one needs to see that.

I haven’t really been able to try on any knee high boots, but I do have a recommendation for ankle boots. The 1460 Ambasador Lace Boots from Doc Martens. I tried these boots on in store, and they are amazing. The store manager at Doc Martens told me that since they’re made from a softer leather, they don’t take as long to break in. If you’re a first time Doc Martens buyer like me, they’ll be perfect for you. These boots will last you many upon many boots seasons.

A Brand to Watch Out For: Paula Canovas Del Vas

For this week’s article, I wanted to do something a little different. Paris Fashion Week just ended, and instead of showcasing multiple brands, I’m highlighting one brand and going into a deep dive on their looks and pieces. To be fair, I picked a house that I’ve never heard of, so that I can give my raw first impressions of what they have to offer. For the Spring/Summer 2025 Paris Fashion Week, I have chosen to focus on Paula Canovas Del Vas. Let’s begin.

To give some context, Paula Canovas Del Vas was born in southern Spain, and is part Argentinian. She currently resides in Shoreditch, London. and received her bachelor’s and master’s from Central Saint Martins. Growing up, Del Vas was influenced greatly by her mother and grandmother who she viewed as very strong powerful women.

The Looks

From this season’s collection, I’m definitely getting a fun 80s vibe from it overall, but there are also hints of this decade with the styling and makeup.

For this first look, I really liked the drama of the creme cape over the model’s head, and how it seamlessly flows into the dress. The bubble skirt and definition on the shoulders remind me a lot of dresses from the 80s, but not as loud. The piece remains very elegant as well with boat neckline, and would be the perfect wedding dress.

I’m really in love with these jeans. The exposed zipper, tulle on the pockets, and the color fit seamlessly. I need them in my closet now. The silver portion doesn’t really complement the rest of the look that well, but I still like it. I imagine it would look gorgeous on top of a black strapless gown. Can you see it because I can.

For this look, this top really fascinates me. It looks like 2 ruched pillows sewn together and I’m here for it. If I could wear this top, I’d probably style it with a white turtleneck underneath, my hair up in some sort of bun, some loose grey jeans, and heeled sandals.

Lately, I’ve felt very drawn to hairpieces for some reason. I don’t wear them often, but some, like this one, have been calling my name recently. Actually, when I look closely, these might be earrings. Either way, if one were to style these earrings, they would be the focal point of the look. The floral and metallic details are something Del Vas carries throughout the collection and I like what’s she done with it here. The earrings aren’t being overpowered by other parts of the outfit.

Overall Conclusions

Through writing this article, I’ve kind of fallen in love with the Paula Canovas Del Vas brand. It’s nice to see a newer house thrive. From glancing at her past collections, it’s obvious she has grown as a designer over the years. I can’t wait to watch her journey and see next season’s looks.

My Most Adored Looks from the 2024 Emmys

Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a wonderful day. For this week’s post, I wanted to show you all what my favorite looks were from the 2024 Emmys and why they were my favorite looks. Before we begin all of that, I wanted to shine a light on all of the winners this year. A special shoutout goes to the Shōgun cast and crew as this show won 18 total Emmys including Primetime and Creative Arts. Go y’all for breaking history and showcasing Japanese history to an audience out of Japan.

Now, overall the red carpet looks for the Emmys were very strong this year, but there were some ones I couldn’t keep my eyes off.

Quinta Brunson

Wearing: Georges Chakra, Tiffany & Co. Jewelry

I found this look so unique, because you don’t see this fabric outside of the runway. Also, I love how the dress moves with her. Every photo is going to look a little different based on the angle of the camera, and how she positions herself in front of the light. It’s a dress you have to document on a video not just photos.

Anna Sawai

Wearing: Vera Wang and Cartier Jewelry

I love the shape and construction of the sweetheart neckline. The drop waist peplum skirt on this mermaid style gown is just absolutely gorgeous on Sawai. In addition, her makeup is perfect for her. It accentuates her cheekbones and full lips, while also being very light and soft. Also, congratulations to Ms. Anna Sawai for winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 2024 Emmys. The first Japanese actress to do so.

Christine Baranski

Wearing: Oscar de La Renta

The fabric of this gown is absolutely gorgeous in the light. It looks like liquid gold that has been molded on her body. Baranski looks elegant, regal, and refined. Something that should be on every red carpet.

Aja Naomi King

Wearing: Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

She looks like a rose in bloom. King would have worn this to the Met Gala, and would’ve easily made any best dressed list. I love the silver necklace and makeup as well. Her look is very cool toned, but she’s still glowing. Stunning.

Alan Cumming

Wearing: Teddy Vonranson

I love the nod to his heritage, as well as how the plaid peaks in and out of the blazer. Additionally, he’s serving face in the fiercest way.

Tyler James Williams

Wearing: Dolce and Gabbana and Tiffany & Co. Jewelry

His stylist did their JOB with this one. The look is a great juxtaposition of strong and delicate. His defined biceps are one focus, but the simple and soft jewelry tones it down a little.

Kurumi Nakata

Wearing: A Second Hand Kimono from Fukufuku Shinjuku

Her traditional dress is just something you don’t see at the Emmys. I love that she didn’t try to wear something to get the approval of the West. She stayed true to her roots and told a story through her kimono.

Abby Elliot

Wearing: Monique Lhuillier

It’s a very simple gown and silhouette, but it looks just darling on her. She’s the epitome of Spring, and I’m here for it. Elliot’s a reminder that not every look has to be world shattering. It can just stand amongst the crowd and be timeless.

How to Begin Fashion Sketching

Fashion sketching, fashion illustration, whatever you want to call it is an extremely valuable skill to possess. Whether you want to start designing clothes, learn more about fashion or just love to draw, fashion sketching is for you. The reason I love sketching clothes is because it allows me to bring my ideas to life and make those ideas seem more tangible and possible.

Getting started in fashion sketching is a very nonlinear process. Believe me I should know. Use the designs on this blog for example. Some of them are pretty good while others still haunt me till this day. This is totally okay though. The vision is still there.

A croquis for fashion sketching.

To start designing all you really need is a pencil and paper. That’s really it. To begin, first try to learn how to draw a croquis. Croquis(kroh-kee) is a French word that means rough sketch or rough draft, and is the base/body of your design. To tell the truth, I can’t really draw a croquis, but I will not stop trying until I get it. I hope you all don’t either. Until you perfect it though, I recommend purchasing a set of traceable croquis on Etsy.

After working with a pencil and paper, you’ll want to start slowly purchasing materials. I say slowly because these materials can be a little pricey so pace yourselves.

  • A plain sketchbook for drafting large sketches: This one from Michael’s is pretty affordable and great for different types of media
  • Drawing materials such as colored pencils, markers, and watercolors
  • Blending pencil for blending colors together
  • A lightboard for tracing-You can use it for tracing a croquis or transferring designs.
  • Erasers
  • Pencils with a B or H lead for initial sketching
  • Small mini notebooks for sketching on the go

When it comes to actually sketching, I don’t really have any tips except to keep sketching. With time you’ll improve through repetition. One teacher I really like though is Zoe Hong on Youtube. She does a really great job at breaking down different aspects of fashion illustration like shading, drawing embellishments, and designing a collection.

Even though not everyone of you may not want to immediately start sketching clothes, I hope you learned a little more about fashion illustration. If you’re on the fence of learning how to sketch, take it from me. I’ve been sketching for years, and though some of my designs need some work, I find it to be a really rewarding process.

“How to Dress Like”: That’s So Raven

Have you ever watched a tv show or movie, and thought, “I really like this character’s style”. In this new series, “How to Dress Like”, I will teach you all how you can emulate the style of a character from a tv show or movie to your preferences.  For the first installment of this series, I’m beginning with a character who is known for her grandeur and trailblazing style: Raven Baxter from That’s So Raven.

That’s So Raven, featured its titular character Raven in her life as a teen psychic. Viewers were entertained by Raven’s wacky hijinks, but also given groundbreaking 2000s era looks. Raven was the girl pulling up to school in feather trimmed coats, and tailored sets. I feel like many viewers were always intrigued by her style choices, but didn’t want to copy them exactly. This is why I wanted to share with you all the most prevalent style choices made by Raven. Additionally, you will learn how to integrate them into your outfits.

1. Hairpieces

After scanning different episodes, I noticed that Raven almost always had some sort of hair piece in. Sometimes it was a flower, sometimes a feather, but it always complemented her outfit in a seamless way so that everything was cohesive from top to bottom.

I don’t know about y’all, but feathers aren’t my thing, but I do like the idea of wearing a hairpiece to complete a look. If you’re interested as well, this is something you could easily DIY at home. You could use plastic rhinestones,  tiny stars, or even legos. Just pick something that complements your style, and just glue it to a barrette or bobby pin. Use the hairpiece as a vessel for your personality and statement you are trying to make.

2. Sets

My girl Raven loved a matching set. The material could’ve been satin, denim, or even cotton but her sets were always tailored so elegantly and looked one of a kind. In this day and age, I feel like finding a matching set with good quality fabric is hard to come by and expensive. This is why I encourage you all to turn to the thrifts. Look for pieces with similar materials and colors then embellish them so that they fit you perfectly. Use sequins, embroidery, lace really anything that suits your fancy to make the sets unique to you. To take it up a notch, I also recommend tailoring them yourself or through a professional tailor so they fit you perfectly.

3. Dressier Outfits

I love that society has become more accepting of letting people dress more relaxed, but I feel like a lot of people have forgotten how nice it feels to get dressed up every once in a while. People don’t realize that you shouldn’t get dressed up to appease other people. You should instead get dressed to make yourself feel confident and powerful. Raven always modeled this behavior which is why I admire this character so much. Below is a photo of a really iconic outfit worn by Raven in the show, and next to it I have included a simple way you can mimic it for a normal day.

Dressing up an outfit doesn’t have to be about putting on your highest heels or wearing expensive jewelry. It’s really about putting in a little extra outfit to make yourself feel more sure in your skin.
