“What makes someone go wow about you”? Last week, I met with my mentor, and she told me that I should find a way to set myself apart not just for medical school admissions, but in life. There are 8 billion people on Earth, and it’s so easy to get lost in that sea of people. How we can distinguish ourselves is setting ourselves apart in our communities, and then growing from there.
She began telling me about her friend who specializes in finding resources for blind students in schools. Her friend specifically did her masters in regards to educational resources. After grad school, she then reached out to school districts offering her services. Some of the districts she reaches out to only have 2 or blind students per school, but the work she’s doing is so specific and necessary. She’s reaching an audience that is often forgotten.
How this Relates to the Olympics
After she told me about her friend, we began discussing the Olympics and all of the monumental events that have taken place so far. Carlos Yulo from the Philippines just won his country’s 2nd and 3rd gold medals ever at the Olympics. Julien Alfred won St. Lucia’s first ever medal and it was gold, making her country of less than 200,000 people extremely proud. Simone Biles and Suni Lee made epic comebacks to the Olympics stage cementing themselves in gymnastics history. Katie Ledecky, I have no words. This woman has won the 800 m freestyle event 4 games in a row since she was 15 years old. She dominates.
Every person that I have just written about above, including my mentor’s friend, have at least one thing in common. They’re all breaking barriers, inspiring others, and distinguishing themselves in their communities. They have something that makes people go “wow” about them.
What You Can Do Now
I say all of this not to intimidate, but to inspire you all to find something that makes someone go wow about you. As far as I’m concerned summer doesn’t end until September 1st, so take the next couple of weeks to think about what you can do to set yourself apart in your community, and reach others.
Think about your passions and principles. Start looking in your hometown to see what niches need to be filled. Create something in which you’re not just clocking in for a shift but creating a paradigm shift as my mentor told me.
I hope this week’s post inspired at least one of you to think about what you can do to make someone go wow about you. Make sure to subscribe to be notified of new ones. Stay sharp 😉
Hey people!!!!!
Good mood and good luck to everyone!!!!!
