Gowns are something I value very much in the world. They’re fun, whimsical, and extremely frivolous at times, but that’s okay. I deserve to be a little frivolous at times. I’m just fantasizing about gowns.
I love designing clothes, but I most love designing gowns. To me fashion is art no matter how simple the piece is, but gowns are special subsection of art that I hold dear to me. I’ve never really understood traditional art; paintings, drawings, sculptures, they never make much sense to me. Whenever I go to a museum, I always just stand in front of the art feeling confused. Why did the artist choose these elements? What story is this painting trying to tell? What am I as the viewer supposed to learn from this piece of work?
When I’m looking at gowns though, it feels like I don’t just understand the gown’s story, but like I wrote it myself. I see how the dress’s neckline complements the sleeves it a way that adds dimension in such an effortless way. I see how the gown’s train is somehow understated yet it’s a power statement. Some people may prefer a Renoir, but I will take a beautifully crafted gown any day.
I often forget what excites me about fashion especially when I get so embroiled in all of my responsibilities. When I mindlessly scroll through Pinterest saving gowns to my board though, I swiftly remember why fashion takes up so much of my brain space.
Now, I encourage you all to go on Pinterest, and make yourself a board of something frivolous. It could be gowns perhaps, or maybe even shoes or homes you might like. Whatever it is, give yourself the grace and space be a little frivolous, even if you’re just fantasizing about it.
