Every summer before this has always been the same. My days typically consisted of the 3 main things: waking up around 10, reading some books, and watching TV. This summer in particular is going to be unlike any other summer because summer classes have infiltrated my life.
This past week I started Physics 1, and I can tell it’s going to be a doozy. There are twenty 2 plus hour homework assignments, lecture and lab 4 hours a day, and textbook problems. I know that by taking this class over the summer, I’m freeing up my fall semester, but it’s still summer. How will I have time to hang out with my friends, and focus on my hobbies if I’m studying all the time?
The class is only for about a month, but it feels like eternity. I wake at 6:30 each morning, drive to the campus, and sit in a class where the professors don’t even know our names. The class is just a month, so I understand that the professor won’t have time to learn our names, but it’s still so impersonal.
Thankfully, this is the only summer class I’m taking when others are enrolled in upwards 4. It’s exasperating how as students we have to take summer classes, because there isn’t enough time in the fall and spring semesters to complete all of our credits. Some people take summer classes to get ahead while others take it to avoid having to overload every semester. We have to pick between the stress caused from taking 20 credits in a semester, or spending our summer days in a dark classroom. When will we finally truly get a break?
All in all, I’m still on the fence about summer classes. Yes, you can get ahead, but is it worth spending your summer writing essays, and studying for exams everyday? Only time will tell.
