Your face is art, so it’s important you keep it clean. Every night when you do your skincare routine, you typically begin with cleansing your face. My question for you all is how long do you wash your face for?
Be honest. If it’s only for 10 seconds, or maybe 30 seconds that’s okay. You can change that. When I first started my skincare routine, I would only wash my face for about 20 seconds. Back then, I used to wear makeup more often. Not washing my skin properly was extremely detrimental. I had little bumps along my forehead and chin, and I never really got all of my makeup off. When I would use my toner, there would still be leftover makeup on the cotton pad.
What is a cleanser?
Back then I didn’t know how a cleanser really worked, and you may not either. A cleanser is a surfactant: an active substance that lowers the surface tension on the skin to remove dirt, sebum, and oil from makeup. When you lather cleanser on your face, the chemicals in the cleanser pick up the dirt off the skin leaving your face supple, clean, and fresh.
A cleanser won’t do its job in only 10 or 20 seconds, so you need to wash your face for at least 60 seconds. I know this may feel like forever, but your face wash needs that full minute to pick up all the grime, dirt, and makeup. If washing your face for a full minute dries out your skin, try washing for 45 seconds instead, or a new cleanser. It’s possible that your current cleanser is too harsh for your skin.
How Switching to 60 seconds Changed my Skin
After I started washing my face for a full minute, there was a noticeable difference in my skin. There were less bumps and much less leftover makeup. Washing your face for longer MAY even reduce the acne on your skin. I say MAY because acne is caused my a multitude of things beside unclean skin: hormones, one’s environment, and certain medications. Here’s a fun tidbit, typically people with acne have the cleanest skin.
So, the main takeaway this week, is to wash your skin for 60 seconds morning and night. Your skin will thank you.
