Summer is finally here. Kids are out of school, graduations have wrapped up, and families are heading off to vacation. Everyone’s out and about in the sun having a merry ole time, but the real question is… are you wearing sunscreen? You aren’t. Tsk tsk tsk. I was once like you. I never wore sunscreen, and when I did it was only on my arms and legs. I’m here to inform you of my top 4 reasons you should wear sunscreen every day.
1. Skin Cancer
My number one reason for wearing sunscreen daily is that it reduces the risk of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, wearing just SPF 15 can reduce your risk of melanoma by 50% and squamous cell carcinoma by 40%. How does sunscreen lessen the risk of skin cancer you may ask? Well, sunscreen blocks ultraviolet radiation and it’s estimated that 80-90% of skin cancers are associated with ultraviolet radiation. Though skin cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, it’s still cancer. Like any other cancer, it starts out small. With skin cancer, stage 1 is generally curable, but as the stages progress it becomes fatal. Be proactive, and at least wear sunscreen on your face daily.
2. Aging
Who doesn’t want to stay young? Let me rephrase that. Who doesn’t want to stay looking young? Sunscreen is an easy way to achieve this. Not only do UV rays cause skin cancer, but they can also cause the breakdown of collagen. Collagen is a protein that improves skin elasticity and hydration. Basically, it keeps the skin tight and bouncy. I don’t want you all to think that wrinkles aren’t beautiful because they are. They’re a sign of aging gracefully. Sunscreen won’t prevent you from aging at all, but it will help with premature aging. Wearing sunscreen allows you to look 20 when you are 20, and 50 when you are 50. It helps enhance your glow as you age.
3. Hyperpigmentation
Wearing sunscreen doesn’t mean you’re never going to get hyperpigmentation again, but it does prevent the exacerbation of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by eczema, acne/acne scars, genetics, or hormonal changes. (Quick interlude. Please stop picking your acne. I do it sometimes too, but pimple patches help a lot more, and they lessen the chance of scarring. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.) Hyperpigmentation comes from the increased production of melanin by melanocytes. When melanocytes are exposed to the sun, UV radiation causes the production of melanin. This in turn makes dark spots darker. Wearing sunscreen is the simplest way to prevent this.
4. Sunburn
Even if you aren’t worried about hyperpigmentation or aging early, you’ve probably been worried about getting a sunburn. A sunburn is damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet rays. Do you know what absorbs and/or blocks sun rays? Sunscreen. I know that some of you want to get a nice little tan this summer, but you can still tan with sunscreen on. Sunscreen is very effective, but even SPF 100 only blocks 90% according to the Environmental Working Group. So, when you tan, wear sunscreen.
Now that you know why sunscreen is important, you need to know what sunscreens you should wear. Below you’ll find some great sunscreens that are affordable and effective.
Banana Boat Sport Ultra SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion
This is the sunscreen that I use every day. It’s really affordable and gives my skin a nice glow. Though, if you have really oily skin this may not be the one for you.
Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick
For girls with really oily skin, there is a product out there for you. Don’t worry. This sunscreen right here is just what you need. It’s alcohol, fragrance, and essential oil free. Plus it mattifies the skin instantly. You heard me. Instantly.
ISNTREE Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel
This last sunscreen is great for my dry skin girlies. It’s lightweight, not clumpy under makeup, and is formulated with 8 types of hyaluronic acid. This means maximum hydration. You can protect and moisturize your skin at the same time.
That’s all for this week. Thank you for reading and stay sharp 😉
